The the coming of age of the World Wide Web, and one way you might use it to change your career

The Web was born from a an essentially straightforward idea – that one site can be retrieved over a network from one computer employing the previously existing Internet, and that site can be linked to another, by means of a link; and then further documents can be retrieved from further links in a possibly limitless sequence. From this original conception by its creator Tim Berners Lee in March 1989, the Web has expanded beyond anyone’s original expectations, to many millions of websites now, in a space of only two decades. The promise that this new invention offers for commercial enterprises, has been recognized by forward-thinking business people, and hence the number of online jobs , helping businesses attain profit on the Internet, has greatly multiplied.

The essential problem was how anybody could locate where on the WWW there might exist the information they were looking for. Search Engines soon appeared to resolve this conundrum. Users were able to type in a keyword, and the engines attempted to match this keyword with words that appeared in various websites. However, such a methodology was subject to abuse, because it could not really ascertain either the quality of the site or its genuine relevance to what the user was looking for.

Matters changed when a pair of students from Stanford University in 1996 pioneered the undertaking that was later launched as Google. These two introduced the idea of corroborating a site’s relevance to a search term, by searching for further trusted sites that linked to it. Such a technique reformed the method by which a search engine was able to distinguish between verifiably suitable sites and those masquerading as relevant. what happened next is history, as Google rapidly won a dominance of the search engine market.

For this reason, any Internet business needs to take into account the Google method of employing corroboration to decide on any given website’s search engine placement, as well as optimizing the site internally. Therefore we have seen established a need for the knowledge of a search engine optimizer (SEO), who specializes in the type of skills used in website optimization. A high proportion of online jobs involve advising businesses to maximize their search engine placement using these methods.

A frequent pitfall is to assume that your company’s webmaster will be able to resolve issues such as these as part of their work. While website developers may develop an attractive site for your company, they may not have the know-how to increase its search engine ranking; that is the specialism of an optimization consultant. This person can work From home, in consultation with the client, to maximize the ranking their website receives making use of various ethical techniques.

Reflect on any time when you Googled for something. It may have returned an enormous quantity of results for the input term. But did you bother going further than page 1 of the search results? Thus, it is crucial for an optimizer to establish a website onto page 1 of Google’s listing, in order to ensure the client’s Internet business is increased.

The online jobs in this field rely on the retention of clients who see a long-term advantage to them from an improved Search Engine placement, bringing searchers to their site who are specifically interested in their product or service. For somebody who wants to work From home, self-employed positions as an SEO are ideal.

What Would Be Your Answer If The Jobs Genie Materialised And Wanted To Know What You Would Like To Be Your Best Job?

What is the best job? For everyone asked that question, the reply will be different. The range will be huge but I expect some trends will come out. Football or some form of sport will most likely feature heavily (as long as it is accompanied by Premier League wages). Others will obviously revolve around the entertainment industry with many people wanting to be the singer or guitar players for their favourite band, tv or movie star and many men will want to be porn stars although how many female leads they will actually find to ‘work’ with may turn out to be an anticlimax (as it were).

For me, the reply will have to involve being able to Work From Home since I have always despised journeying and I’ve done jobs that have involved being away from home all week because of the distance previously and I really don’t want to go back to that again.

Previous jobs that I’ve had that permitted me to Work From Home have included having an Internet Business where I operated a record shop on eBay which was great fun, buying people’s old vinyl record collections and then selling the individual records although you quickly find that where Pink Floyd, Elvis and Velvet Underground albums can go for lots of money, you also wind up getting saddled with dozens of copies of Eurythmics, Bananarama and Wham! records. What I hadn’t bargained on was the expenditure of relisting when records didn’t go first time around and eventually had to call a halt.

I’ve also had various Online Jobs which are ideal because the internet, software and technology that operate on it make it an excellent environment to establish as an Internet Business and people can Work From Home with basic technical know-how.

But I reckon that on the whole, I’d like a variety. Some which pay rather well and these would most probably be Online Jobs of some description that would be enjoyable to do such as Search Engine Optimisation, with the balance of the time spent being a professional railway modeller. That sounds dull, but in reality involves a wide variety of activities from design, carpentry, electrical and structural engineering (a smaller scale by default but much safer than the real thing) not to mention God like abilities to create a landscape and the features on it. A good model railway is often fantastic to behold and creating one must come with an immense feeling of fulfilment. And of course, because it’s my ideal job I’d be the most famous in the world and can charge huge fees for my work.

I’d also like to be a professional cricket supporter which will entail going with the England team on tour around the hotter parts of the world in United Kingdom winter. Having Online Jobs would obviously of course mean that I would be able to multitask by doing those at the same time wherever I was in the world, so I could kindly demand lesser fees for my services to the Barmy Army and make up the difference by working for my Internet Business.

But alas, the world doesn’t do it that way for most though of course many will say that their job to be their ideal one. But for the remainder of us the only thing to do is to make the best of what we have. That means someone else by the way, not me as oddly enough I think I do have my ideal job. So there!

Trying different methods of job seeking in a steep economic slump looking for employment outside of the normal job ads

The truth is that the present employment situation is the most difficult in living memory, and it probably won’t get any better in the next few years. In the news I heard mentioned that sixty graduates are chasing every graduate level opening, and things aren’t a lot more cheery for other sectors of the market, either. Some job hunters may think that there’s a greater chance of buying a winning lottery ticket than finding a job through the normal advertised jobs market. Therefore people need to experiment with alternative ways of gaining employment. Such methods might vary from normal self-employment, access to employed positions through other means than the job adverts, or some of the new options to Work From Home presented by Internet Business.

It is said by experts that only around 20% of the total number of jobs are in fact advertised, whether in the papers, through job agencies or the Online Jobs boards. And when you think about this, it makes sense. The jobs market is the one single area in which the buyer does the advertising. If I need to buy a car, I don’t pay for an ad in the paper saying “car wanted, hatchback, blue or green, approximately £10,000”. I peruse the cars on offer in the auto sections of the local papers. Why is the employment market any different?

Due to this a high proportion of companies turn to headhunters. These are specialists who find suitable candidates for the position, who may not even be applying for jobs. Nevertheless, if job hunters get their Curriculum Vitae placed on the Internet, they may actually be considered as a candidate by the headhunters. Job seekers also need to use their networks, asking anyone of their acquaintance to listen out for any potential jobs they hear of.

Many take up the chances to Work From Home or work using their own transport in a number of ways. A number of these are not too well-paid. One lady I’ve heard of gets paid only £20 for packing 1,000 greeting cards inside envelopes. I was once offered the opportunity to be a self-employed courier. For thirty delivered letters per day, the pay was less than what I’d earn for packing a thousand envelopes – out of which I would have to pay for petrol and tax. Unsurprisingly I I decided not to take up this offer.

Nevertheless, there exist many Online Jobs that can offer a gainful and well paid opportunity. Examples include web design vacancies and specialisation in improving a website’s search engine ranking. Internet Business is big business, and you can work in it without going away from your place of residence.

To work in this business, it is of course necessary to have the right skills. Candidates will need to undertake the commitment to put in time and finances, paying up-front for a course in web design or search engine optimization. The time is now long gone when you could build a web site using a ‘teach yourself’ book on HTML. There are many additional technologies now involved. Online Jobs are highly specialised, professional positions. By the same token experts having these skills can ask for above average pay.

One unfortunate fact is that the more time a person remains on the dole, the tougher it’s going to be to find employment. They will forget their skills and become dispirited. I have experienced the disappointment of applying to various positions via the Online Jobs boards, without even receiving an acknowledgement, to say nothing of an interview. That’s why it’s really crucial to break out of the job hunters chasing that one fifth of vacancies that are advertised, and seek out opportunities in other ways. The fact I can now Work From Home running my own Internet Business has certainly allowed me to take a novel direction even though I could see few prospects before.
