The Love Of Convenience

As civilization continues to go on, we can see things grow more and more complicated. While we like to think of these advancements as doing great things to help the world, the fact is much of the new technologies created by scientists and engineers are simply matters of convenience. So many things, from a Paper towel dispenser to an automatic soap dispenser can massively improve the speed at which we can go through our day to day lives, but how much more convenient can things actually get?

There’s an amusing story by a technology philosopher: He said that with current technologies in widescreen televisions increasing to larger and larger images, we’ll soon have a life like screen that covers a whole wall. The next technological advancement after this will be the opportunity to see this image in 3D. Someday, we may actually have the chance to walk through the wall and experience life on the other side. Then as we’re in this super realistic environment, we’ll be capable of watching TV!

The implication of this is that all our advancements, while certainly astounding, are not enhancing our lives in constructive ways. Imagine the number of scientists, engineers and professors it would have taken to develop widescreen televisions to the level they are now at. What would our society look like if they instead spent this time creating medicines, or something more valuable than our own amusement?

Bottled water is another great example of the weird situation Western civilization today finds itself in. While we can easily get safe drinking water from a tap (a miracle of technology in itself), there is still a demand for water that’s pretty much the same, only bottled and sold in a shop. To openly ask the shopkeeper as to the reason this is will probably get you a few dirty looks, but it’s still amusing to consider the direction this world is going in.

So are these developments just a part of human nature, or is there something else forcing us to demand more and more convenience? Many dissidents remark that as organizations grow and grow, they start to take on the properties of a machine rather than a community. Those within this system will misinterpret the demands of such a machine as their own inner natures. We can see this happen today, as those in our society often believe bottled water, owning fifty pairs of shoes, and spending most of their earnings on things they don’t need, continue to be convinced that they’re ahead in the game of life.

If we look at societies outside of Westerners, we can notice something far different. Indigenous communities such as the Australian Aboriginal and Native American had a view of living that was far more attached to nature, and saw the human race as simply another animal. While the assumption of rule has been made by today’s culture, perhaps recent economic and environmental problems are signs of the temporary nature of the supremity of Western civilization.

You Must Know These Job Search Tips

During an active job search it’s tremendously important not lose your hope and stay motivated no matter what. The following recommendations will hopefully help you in achieving your goals and land the job you want.

1. Define your enemies that discourage you in a job hunt. And your enemies are lack of control, constant rejection and failure. It’s essential to realise that all these factors shouldn’t affect your motivation and self-esteem.

2. Focus on your future. Don’t waste your time thinking about your previous employer. Every time you look backwards you are being sucked into unnecessary contemplation that won’t give you anything.

3. Put a stress on your strong sides. Although, it is in a human nature to spend much more time thinking about our own weaknesses than strong sides, you should remember that to get a job you need to focus on your strengths.

4. Envision your goal. It’s not enough to have a goal of “getting a job”. Envision it, in every detail.

5. Be prepared. Drill your interview, update/improve your CV, receive a reasonable job search, career counseling and help. Bear in mind that “good enough” is never enough.

6. Networking. The fact is that around 70% of jobs are found through personal contacts, i.e. former colleagues, friends, friends of friends, etc. On the contrary, less than 10% of jobs are obtained via the Internet. Hence, what are your reasons of spending 95% of your time online?

7. Challenge your excuses. It’s the same thing every time we need to do something very important – we make excuses. Challenge them and break the habit – make step forward and make a call now and not when you’re “in the mood”.

8. Don’t give up. While landing a job you really want, you will fail at number of occasions but that’s not the end of the world. Remember that the more potential employers you’ve gone through the better your chances of initially working with the one you want.

9. Keep up your professionalism. It’s essential to understand that being a professional is not the way people treat you but whether they recognise your skills. Manifest your professionalism in every detail. And remember that the most essential time to be a professional is when you are not being treated like one.

10. Compile a well-written CV and motivation letter. Highlight your achievements that resonate with the company’s business and interests. Decide what is the most important and put it in the first place. This can also boost your motivation.

11. Concentrate on your bottom-line value to the company. Of course, everyone talks about their skills and experiences, but companies employ because they need someone to resolve their issues and achieve certain goals. That’s what you should concentrate on.
